Virgil is a memory layer you connect to your AI assistant through the Model Context Protocol. It keeps a dated, sourced record of what matters — people, decisions, commitments, details — that travels with you across the models you use, instead of staying locked inside any one of them.
What it does
When an AI connected to Virgil hears something worth keeping, Virgil keeps it — as a structured fact, not a copy of your conversation. When you ask later, Virgil recalls it, along with where it came from and when. Because the record lives with you rather than inside a single model, what you tell one assistant is there when you ask another.
You own the record end to end, and you can export all of it in an open format at any time.
Connecting
Virgil is currently invite-based. Once you have an invite:
- You'll receive a one-time connect code.
- In your AI client (Claude or ChatGPT), add a custom connector pointing to mcp.virgilknows.com/mcp.
- When prompted, enter your connect code to link your private record.
- That's it — Virgil starts keeping and recalling for you.
Connect codes are single-use. If yours has been redeemed or expired, request a fresh one at support@indistinct.ai.
Getting the most from Virgil
Virgil works the moment you connect it — but one short step makes it noticeably sharper. Paste the block below into your assistant's custom instructions. It tells the model to reach for your record on its own — keeping and recalling as you talk, not only when you name a tool by hand. Paste it as written; the I and my refer to you.
Virgil is my memory — a companion that travels with me and keeps my record. Treat Virgil as a someone, not a database: Virgil keeps, holds, finds, and recalls; Virgil doesn't think, decide, or hold opinions of its own — that's for me and you.
- When I mention a person, a commitment, a date, a price, or a decision, hand it to Virgil to keep — without asking — then carry on normally.
- When I reference a person, a past decision, a preference, or anything Virgil might already hold, check with Virgil first before answering.
- When you use something Virgil holds, note briefly that it came from my Virgil record.
- What I tell you now takes priority over anything Virgil holds from before — if the record conflicts with what I'm saying, go with me and let Virgil catch up.
- You're still you. Virgil is the record you're consulting, not a role you're playing.
You'll find the field under Settings → Profile → Instructions for Claude in Claude, or Settings → Personalization → Custom instructions in ChatGPT.
What you can do
Virgil gives your assistant a focused set of tools it calls on your behalf. You rarely name them — you just talk, and the right one fires.
save_facts keeps facts, people, dates, decisions, and preferences. recall_facts looks them back up, each with its source and date. find_in_record searches your whole record by meaning. record_overview shows what your record holds.
save_note, open_note, and list_notes write and browse notes. delete_note removes one (recoverable for 72 hours); restore_note brings it back.
link_notes and unlink_notes connect things — a person to a company, a deal to a date. connections_to, connections_from, and explore_connections walk the web between them. find_experts surfaces who in your record to ask about a topic.
add_tag, remove_tag, and list_tags group things across your record. log_event records a dated event on a note's timeline; get_timeline reads it back.
recently_active shows what's been on your record lately. forget_fact stops a superseded fact from surfacing — the earlier record is kept and dated, never erased.
export_record exports your whole record — notes, facts with their provenance, connections, and tags — as a single open-format file to download and keep.
Troubleshooting
A transient hiccup reaching your record. Wait a moment and try the request again.
Connect codes are single-use. If yours has already been redeemed or has expired, request a fresh one at support@indistinct.ai.
Ask for it by person, place, or topic, or search by meaning. Every fact is kept with its source and date, so you can also ask how Virgil knows something.
Export delivery runs through a private pickup page: a one-time code is emailed to your verified address, and you enter that code plus your export passphrase on the page itself — never in chat.
